The Rise of China and Its Impact on East Asia

History of international relations suggests that rising power brings challenges and creates unstable environment in the international system. This thesis deals with the rise of China and its implications to the East Asia region. China has experienced massive economic growth over the last few decades which is likely to influence the dynamics not only of the region, but also of the international system as a whole. There is an ongoing discussion in the academic literature regarding the rise of China. In this thesis, the offensive neorealism theory of John J, Mearsheimer is employed. This paper focuses on the region of East Asia, namely to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Since the region is heavily penetrated by the US power, its position is also discussed. The question is how China will behave when it gets more powerful and what strategies the neighbouring countries choose in order to deal with China's rising power. The theory assumes that rising great power strive to dominate its region in order to establish regional hegemony. The main aim of this thesis is to examine whether or not the aforementioned states act according to the prism of offensive neorealism.

Sustainable Energy Development in Central Europe and East Asia: Different Scenarios and Options Evaluation

This research presents an overview of different sustainable energy development scenarios in Central Europe and East Asia, and is aimed to evaluate the efficiency and availability for introducing a specific sustainable energy source. Accordingly: wind, hydropower, solar, bioenergy, geothermal, nuclear energy. By conducting analysis though multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) models, divergences among energy options in Central Europe and East Asia are emphasised due to its preferences in hierarchy. A short introduction, related to the present energy outlook with a series of relative regressions and a case study based on corresponding statistics, is presented firstly. This gives insights to assess the evaluation of sustainable energy development options. Evaluation results indicating Central Europe and East Asia should introduce different sustainable energy technologies on account of their own strengths and drawbacks in energy judgements and criterions. What is the Strategic Impact of Chinese Anti-Access and Area-Denial Capabilities on the Offence-Defence Balance in East Asia? A Comparative Case Study of the United States and Japan

iv ABSTRACT Over the last four decades, the People's Republic of China has modernized its armed forces and acquired the world's largest and most diverse missile arsenal. In light of Beijing's vague yet increasingly assertive stance in the region, China's A2/AD capabilities have sparked a discussion about their offensive potential and threat to the region's stability. This thesis has conducted a qualitative strategic impact of Chinese anti-access and area-denial capabilities on the offence-defence balance in East Asia. Applying Biddle's revised offence-defence theory, this thesis investigated and compared the Sino-American and Sino-Japanese balances. The analyses found that Chinese A2/AD capabilities do not have a uniform impact on the offence-defence balance in the region. Despite its offensive potential, Chinese A2/AD does not provide an effective, sustainable counter to Japan's deep, reserve-oriented force employment strategy. Even though China fields the world's largest fleet, it does not field enough principal surface ships to exploit a temporary offensive advantage. As such, any Chinese attempt to claim the Senkakus would result in a Chinese naval overstretch and create a mutually contested no man's land in the East China Sea. Theories of International Relations in the Regions of East and Southeast Asia

The aim of this thesis is to assess three recognized theories of international relations (the offensive realist theory by John Mearsheimer, the defensive realist theory by Charles Glaser and the liberal theory by John Ikenberry) and determine which of them best corresponds to the development in East and Southeast Asia in the past three decades (1989-2016). This theory-testing case study first introduces the three theories, their basic assumptions and what they predict for the region, especially with regards to actions of the People's Republic of China. The independent variables established by the theories (power, motivation, environment and participation in the global order) are then compared with the dependent variables that represent various aspects of China's behavior. Military spending, economic disputes within the WTO and territorial disputes with Chinese participation are all analyzed with the goal of including a wide range of Chinese behavior in the international sphere. Correlations between the independent and dependent variables determine which theory is the strongest. The theory with the most correlations is pronounced as the most successful. I worked with the idea to prepare a systematically detailed analytical study of the country in relation to its surroundings as well as its internal environment for more than 8 years, including many interruptions. I, above all, contemplated about the way how to truly scientifically, i.e. credibly, it means in the maximum possible the limits of verifiability, develop a full work that could hold up to the colleagues from the scientific community and myself. Sino-Japanese Relations and Security Issues in East Asia

The aim of this work is to examine security issues in East Asia from the perspective of competition for power between Japan and China, since the foundation of the People's Republic of China up to the present. Using the specific case of Sino-Japanese relations, this work tests the hypothesis based on the liberal theory of international relations that closer economic relations reduce the likelihood of conflict among states.

Regional Integration of Japanese Foreign Trade

BACHELOR THESIS Regional Integration of Japanese Foreign Trade Anežka Fialová, 2013 Abstract This work summarizes the development of geographical linkages of Japanese foreign trade on the turn of the 20th century. Its main goal is to investigate, whether there is a clear departure from the dependency on the western economies (US, EU) towards the region of East Asia. Theoretically the work builds on the concept of economic decoupling. At the same time it also mentions the problem of applicability of this concept in the region given the vertical integration of the East Asian trade. Methodologically is the work based on an analytical approach to statistical data and existing literature. Apart from the macroeconomic indicators such as trade volumes, main commodities and foreign trade policy, the influence of the microeconomic factors (mainly the behavior of the Japanese MNC) on the international linkages of the Japanese foreign trade is examined. The results show that the importance of the regional trade is increasing relatively to the extra regional trade. However this process has just begun and it is therefore too early to speak about economic decoupling.
